How to buy HDTV

Before explaining how to buy HDTV, you will probably want to know why it's worth learning about.

Why buy HDTV?

Unparalleled clarity and a crystal clear, widescreen image

An almost 3D like depth of field and image quality

A much sharper, life-like picture than standard-definition television

Amazing, crisp sound with better clarity and bass

    Stunning, almost true-to-life colours

A breathtaking home cinema experience if you answered yes to any of these -you should read on

So, you're in the showroom - now what should you look for?

Look for the Logo

Before you hand over any money to the teenage shop assistant who annoyingly ums and errs every time you ask a question - check the set out for the all-important HD-ready logo. Thanks to the European Industry Association for Information Systems, there is now a minimum standard that all today’s TVs must conform to if it is considered HD-Ready.

Demand true HD pictures

Regardless of whether a digital television set is an LCD or Plasma screen it may not offer true high-definition picture quality. Beware of television sets that are referred to as HD-compatible, as they may be capable of displaying standard-definition pictures from HDTV broadcasts via an additional set top box but they won’t produce anything like the stunning pictures of a truly HD-Ready set.
